One has overwater rooms, decades of history and an all-inclusive setup. The other is only a five-minute boat ride from Davao and has three infinity pools. So where should you actually spend your money in 2026?
For years, recommending a luxury resort in Samal Island was relatively easy.
You booked Pearl Farm Beach Resort.
It was the name most travelers knew, the resort with the iconic parola, overwater Samal Houses and a history stretching back to an actual South Sea pearl farm.
Then Discovery Samal arrived.
Opened in July 2023, the six-hectare five-star resort brought 153 villas and suites, massive pools, contemporary architecture and what Discovery currently describes as the biggest resort convention facilities in Davao.
Suddenly, Samal had a legitimate luxury-resort rivalry.
And in 2026, choosing between them is more complicated than simply picking the newer hotel.
Pearl Farm and Discovery Samal are surprisingly different resorts.
One feels like you’ve escaped Davao completely.
The other can have you crossing the water from Davao to Samal in around five minutes.
One now bundles practically your entire island stay around an all-inclusive concept.
The other gives you considerably more flexibility with restaurants, pools, villas and even access for guests who aren’t staying overnight.
So which one is actually better?
The answer depends heavily on why you’re going to Samal in the first place.

There isn’t an automatic winner.
In fact, each resort wins very different categories.

Surprise No. 1: Discovery Samal Is Only a 5-Minute Boat Ride Away
This may be the biggest practical difference between them.
Pearl Farm’s regular boat trip from Pearl Farm Marina takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes across the Davao Gulf.
Discovery Samal?
Its official website says the resort is just a five-minute boat ride from its Davao Welcome Center.
That’s not a small difference.
If you’re flying to Davao for only two nights, traveling with children, attending an event or simply don’t enjoy long boat crossings, Discovery’s location is an enormous advantage.
Interesting fact: Discovery Samal feels visually isolated when you’re inside the resort, but geographically you’re still remarkably close to Davao City.

Pearl Farm’s longer crossing does the opposite.
It takes more effort to reach, but that extra time on the water makes the arrival feel like you’re actually leaving the city behind.
🏆 Winner for convenience: Discovery Samal
🏆 Winner for the “we’re really on vacation now” feeling: Pearl Farm
Surprise No. 2: Pearl Farm Was Actually a Pearl Farm
This isn’t branding invented by a marketing department.
Before the resort existed, the site was used to cultivate South Sea pearls.
The property was acquired in the early 1980s by entrepreneur Don Antonio O. Floirendo Sr., who eventually transformed it into what Pearl Farm describes as Davao’s first luxury island resort.
And there’s another detail architecture fans may appreciate.
Pearl Farm was designed by Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa, who would later become a National Artist for Architecture.
That explains why Pearl Farm doesn’t look like a resort that simply added Filipino décor to otherwise generic hotel buildings.
Its architecture is part of the experience.
Interesting fact: Look closely around the rooms and public spaces and you’ll find references to different Mindanaoan cultures, including T’nalak, Dagmay textiles, Okir patterns and locally crafted details. Pearl Farm says even its logo draws inspiration from Maranao artistic traditions.

If you want a resort with a story behind it, Pearl Farm has a major advantage.
But Discovery Samal Has an Architecture Story Too
Discovery went in almost the opposite direction.
The resort was designed by architect Ed Ledesma of ELL, while its interiors were handled by designer Manny Samson of Emesaé Design Corp.
Instead of Pearl Farm’s tropical Filipino architecture, Discovery uses dark contemporary structures set against the greenery, water and sky.
The contrast is intentional.
You get expansive glass, modern villas and a resort layout climbing from the beachfront toward higher sections of the property.
Interesting fact: This is also Discovery Resorts’ first and only resort in Mindanao.

So architecturally, this matchup is almost:
Old-school Filipino resort icon vs modern Philippine luxury resort.
Neither feels interchangeable.
The Room Showdown: Overwater House or Private Pool?
Here’s where choosing becomes fun.

Pearl Farm: Sleep Above the Water
Pearl Farm’s approximately 30-square-meter Samal Houses are built directly over the sea.
They come with private balconies and uninterrupted water views, and Pearl Farm itself positions them primarily toward couples.
They’re arguably the room category most strongly associated with Pearl Farm.
You open your curtains and the ocean is essentially underneath you.
For more space, Pearl Farm’s approximately 90-square-meter Samal Suites are two-storey accommodations with a bedroom upstairs, living space below and an outdoor lounge near water level.
If your priority is romance:
Pearl Farm’s Samal House is hard to beat.

Discovery Samal: Your Own Pool Instead
Discovery approaches luxury differently.
Its villas prioritize privacy, space and private pools.
The One Bedroom Villa includes a private yard and private pool, while larger two and three-bedroom villas cater to groups.
And the Three Bedroom Villa gets particularly excessive.
Discovery says its top villa has a detached master bedroom, private dip pool, ten-seater standalone dining area and the biggest L-shaped private plunge pool in the entire estate.
That’s less honeymoon bungalow and more:
“We’re bringing everyone.”
🏆 Winner for couples: Pearl Farm
🏆 Winner for families and groups: Discovery Samal

Three Infinity Pools vs Sleeping Directly Over the Sea
Discovery wins the pool battle almost immediately.
The resort currently has three outdoor infinity pools on different levels of the property:
- Beach Club Pool
- Villa Pool
- Hotel Pool
The Villa Pool is reserved for villa guests.
And because Discovery was constructed on sloping terrain, the pools give guests different perspectives toward the Davao Gulf and Davao City skyline.
This is very much a resort designed for people who like choosing where they want to spend the afternoon.
Pearl Farm doesn’t need to compete in quite the same way.
Its selling point is more about being surrounded by the island itself, particularly when staying in the Samal Houses or crossing over to Isla Malipano.
🏆 Winner for pool lovers: Discovery Samal
🏆 Winner if you’d rather stare at the actual sea: Pearl Farm

Here’s Where Pearl Farm Suddenly Becomes More Interesting in 2026
You might see Pearl Farm’s rate and initially think:
That’s expensive.
But its current setup changes the calculation.
Pearl Farm now prominently markets itself as an all-inclusive experience.
Its current inclusions include:
- Round-trip airport transfers to Pearl Farm Marina
- Boat transfers
- Accommodation
- Full-board dining
- Sunset cocktails with bites
- Selected non-motorized water activities
- Use of resort facilities
Longer stays can also include signature experiences depending on the package booked.
That means breakfast, lunch and dinner are already part of the experience.
And this is where comparing room rates alone can become misleading.

Discovery Samal Gives You More Freedom, But You May Spend More on Food
Discovery’s current direct-booking offer works differently.
The resort currently advertises up to 25% savings on Best Available Rates, with inclusions including:
- Daily breakfast for two
- Round-trip airport transfers
- Round-trip boat transfers
- 30 minutes of crystal kayak or paddleboard use
- Pool and beach use
- Welcome drink
- 15% off food and beverage
- 15% off spa treatments
Notice what’s missing?
Lunch and dinner.
That’s neither automatically good nor bad.
At Discovery, you have more freedom to decide how much you want to eat, where you want to eat and how much you want to spend.
Pearl Farm is more like:
You’ve arrived. Most of the important parts are already handled.
🏆 Winner for predictable vacation spending: Pearl Farm
🏆 Winner for flexibility: Discovery Samal

Discovery Has Another Trick: You Don’t Even Have to Stay There
Here’s one of Discovery Samal’s more interesting advantages.
You can experience the resort without booking a room.
Discovery currently advertises an Island Dining Access package priced at ₱1,500 net per person Sundays to Fridays and ₱2,500 net on Saturdays.
The amount is consumable for dining and includes scheduled round-trip boat transfers from the Davao Welcome Center.
That creates an entirely different way to experience the property.
You could technically stay in Davao City, cross to Discovery for lunch or dinner, enjoy the resort atmosphere and head back afterward.
CG TIP:
If you’re curious about Discovery but aren’t ready to pay for an overnight stay, its dining access may be one of the cheapest ways to get a taste of the resort.
Pearl Farm’s current positioning, by contrast, is much more about committing to the complete overnight island experience.

Foodies May Actually Prefer Discovery
Pearl Farm’s advantage is that full-board dining is already built into its current stay.
Discovery’s advantage is choice.
Its current restaurant lineup includes:
Morning Catch
The resort’s seafood-focused restaurant.
The Bistro
A more refined villa-pool dining experience featuring dishes such as grilled meats, seafood and handmade pasta.
Haribar Lounge
Drinks, cocktails and casual bites overlooking the water.
Pearl Farm goes in a more destination-oriented direction, highlighting international dishes alongside flavors from Mindanao and ingredients supplied by nearby farmers, fishing communities and producers.
It even roasts locally sourced coffee in-house.
So we’d divide this category too.
Want variety and restaurant-hopping? Discovery Samal
Want meals integrated into the island experience? Pearl Farm

Traveling With Kids? Discovery Starts Pulling Ahead
Families are one area where Discovery’s scale becomes useful.
There are multiple pools, larger villas, a Sandbox children’s facility, beachfront activities and the Mindanao Pavilion for indoor recreation.
Its two-bedroom and three-bedroom villas also make multigenerational trips much easier.
Pearl Farm does offer larger Mandaya rooms and Samal Suites suitable for families, but its strongest emotional appeal still feels more geared toward travelers who want quiet island time.
Our pick for a family vacation: Discovery Samal
Especially if grandparents, young children or a larger group are coming.
That five-minute boat crossing becomes even more attractive when you’re moving several people and several suitcases.

Planning a Honeymoon? We’d Probably Choose the Opposite
For couples, Pearl Farm starts making considerably more sense.
There’s the longer boat journey.
The overwater Samal Houses.
Sunset cocktails.
The resort’s heritage architecture.
And considerably less of the large-convention-resort atmosphere.
For anniversaries, proposals and honeymoons, the experience feels more intentionally removed from everyday life.
Then there is an upgrade that Discovery can’t really replicate.

Pearl Farm Has a Secret Weapon Across the Water
It’s called Isla Malipano.
And this is where Pearl Farm can move into an entirely different luxury category.
The private eight-hectare island contains only:
Six three-bedroom villas.
Six two-bedroom pool villas.
That’s just 12 villas across the island.
Malipano also has its own restaurant, bar, pool, chapel, lagoon and three white-sand beaches.
Peacocks roam the island, and a hanging bridge connects it to the nearby De la Paz islet and mangrove area.
And Malipano guests get private boat transfers connecting them to Pearl Farm.
Interesting fact: While regular Pearl Farm transfers take roughly 40 to 45 minutes, Pearl Farm says private Isla Malipano speedboat transfers can reach the island in approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
For privacy, this isn’t much of a contest.
🏆 Winner: Pearl Farm + Isla Malipano

But Try Hosting 1,000 People at Pearl Farm
This is where Discovery fights back.
Discovery Samal wasn’t built purely as a leisure resort.
Its grand ballroom can accommodate up to 1,000 guests, and Discovery promotes the property as having the biggest resort convention facilities in Davao.
That makes it a serious option for:
- Destination weddings
- Corporate retreats
- Conferences
- Large celebrations
- Incentive groups
And remember, guests are still only minutes away by boat from Davao.
Pearl Farm can host events too, but if you’re organizing something genuinely huge, Discovery is the much more obvious choice.
🏆 Winner for weddings and large events: Discovery Samal

Fun Fact: Discovery Samal Is Still Surprisingly New
Pearl Farm has been part of Davao’s tourism landscape for decades.
Discovery Samal officially opened in July 2023.
That means that even in 2026, Discovery is only around three years into its life as a resort.
This explains part of the visual difference.
Discovery feels contemporary because it genuinely is.
Pearl Farm’s appeal is almost the opposite.
Its buildings, history and cultural references give it the sense that you’re staying somewhere with a story that existed long before Instagram.
Discovery photographs like a new luxury resort.
Pearl Farm photographs like Pearl Farm.
And that distinction matters more than it sounds.

Pearl Farm vs Discovery Samal: Which One Feels More Expensive?
This is where we’re deliberately not declaring a winner based purely on published room rates.
Hotel pricing changes constantly according to room category, travel date, occupancy, packages and promotions.
More importantly, the inclusions aren’t equivalent.
A Pearl Farm rate with airport transfers, boat transfers, three meals, sunset cocktails and activities cannot fairly be compared directly with a Discovery rate that includes breakfast and discounts on other dining.
You have to calculate the total vacation cost.
CG TIP:
Before choosing, compare:
Room + transfers + breakfast + lunch + dinner + drinks + activities
rather than:
Room vs room.
You may end up surprised by which resort actually costs less for the trip you want.
What About Promos?
Discovery currently has the clearer public discount.
Its official direct-booking offer advertises up to 25% savings on Best Available Rates, along with breakfast, transfers and several resort privileges.
Pearl Farm, meanwhile, is currently emphasizing the value of its all-inclusive structure rather than prominently advertising a universal public promo code on the pages reviewed for this article.
That makes this another unusual comparison:
Want a visible room-rate discount?
Check Discovery first.
Want more expenses bundled into the rate?
Check Pearl Farm carefully before assuming Discovery is cheaper.
Always verify current promotions and inclusions directly with the resort before paying.
So, Pearl Farm or Discovery Samal?
Here’s our simplest answer.
Choose Pearl Farm if:
You want the classic Samal experience.
You’re traveling as a couple.
It’s a honeymoon or anniversary.
You want an overwater room.
You prefer a quieter destination resort.
You like Filipino architecture and heritage.
You don’t mind a longer boat trip.
You want meals and major vacation expenses already bundled together.
Or you want to go all the way and stay on Isla Malipano.
Choose Discovery Samal if:
You want a newer five-star resort.
You’re traveling with children or a larger family.
You love infinity pools.
You want a private-pool villa.
You only have a short time in Davao.
You want an extremely quick boat transfer.
You’re organizing a wedding, corporate retreat or large gathering.
Or you’d rather choose and pay for your meals individually.
The CG Verdict
Pearl Farm is still the more distinctive resort.
There’s only one Pearl Farm.
Its history as an actual pearl farm, Francisco Mañosa architecture, overwater accommodations, all-inclusive setup and access to Isla Malipano give it a personality that would be difficult for a newer resort to recreate.
But Discovery Samal may be the easier resort to recommend to more people.
It’s newer, extremely accessible, family-friendly, packed with pools and facilities, and its villas make it particularly attractive for groups.
So has Discovery Samal finally beaten Pearl Farm?
Not exactly.
It has simply given travelers a very good reason to stop automatically choosing Pearl Farm.
And that’s probably the biggest change in Samal luxury travel today.
Our final picks:
- Romantic getaway: Pearl Farm
- Honeymoon: Pearl Farm
- Family vacation: Discovery Samal
- Friends or large group: Discovery Samal
- Private-pool villa: Discovery Samal
- Overwater room: Pearl Farm
- Pools: Discovery Samal
- Heritage and atmosphere: Pearl Farm
- Food already included: Pearl Farm
- Easiest from Davao: Discovery Samal
- Big wedding or corporate event: Discovery Samal
- Ultimate privacy: Pearl Farm’s Isla Malipano
- Can’t decide: Stay at one, then use Discovery’s dining access to see the other side of Samal luxury.
